Candle Care & Maintenance

How should I burn my candle for the first time?

The first burn is the most important. Allow the candle to burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the container. This typically takes 2–4 hours, depending on the candle size. Doing so helps prevent tunneling and promotes an even burn throughout the life of the candle.

Why is the first burn so important?

Wax has a memory. If the candle is extinguished before a full melt pool forms, future burns may continue to tunnel down the center, reducing fragrance performance and shortening the candle’s lifespan.

How long should I burn my candle at a time?

For best performance, burn your candle for 2–4 hours per session. Avoid burning for more than 4 hours continuously.

Should I trim the wick?

Yes. Before each burn, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm). This helps maintain a clean flame, minimizes soot, and promotes an even burn.

What happens if I don’t trim the wick?

An untrimmed wick may produce a larger flame, excess soot, mushrooming, uneven burning, and faster wax consumption.

What is mushrooming?

Mushrooming is the buildup of carbon at the tip of the wick, creating a mushroom-like shape. This is normal and can be easily prevented by trimming the wick before each use.

Fragrance Performance

Why can’t I smell my candle immediately?

Some fragrances become more noticeable after the wax has melted and formed a full melt pool. Room size, airflow, and fragrance type can also affect scent perception.

What is cold throw?

Cold throw refers to the fragrance you smell when the candle is unlit.

What is hot throw?

Hot throw refers to the fragrance released while the candle is burning and the wax is melted.

Why does my candle smell stronger in some rooms than others?

Room size, ceiling height, ventilation, open windows, fans, and air conditioning can influence fragrance performance.

Candle Appearance

Why does the surface of my candle look uneven after burning?

Natural waxes such as soy and beeswax may develop slight frosting, texture variations, or uneven surfaces after cooling. These are normal characteristics of natural wax and do not affect performance.

What is frosting?

Frosting appears as white crystalline patterns on the wax surface. It is a natural occurrence in soy-based candles and does not impact quality or fragrance performance.

Why has the wax changed color?

Natural waxes and certain fragrance oils may slightly change color over time when exposed to light and air. This is normal and does not affect candle performance.

Burning Issues

Why is my candle tunneling?

Tunneling usually occurs when the candle is not allowed to reach a full melt pool during the first few burns. Following the recommended burn time can help prevent this.

Why is my flame too small?

A small flame may be caused by an overly long wick that has curled into the wax, debris in the melt pool, or a wick that needs trimming and cleaning.

Why is my flame too large?

A wick that is too long may create a large flame. Extinguish the candle, allow it to cool, trim the wick to 1/4 inch, and relight.

Why is there black soot on the container?

Minor soot can occur if the wick is too long or the candle is exposed to drafts. Keeping the wick properly trimmed helps reduce soot.

Safety

Where should I place my candle while burning?

Always place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from curtains, drafts, children, pets, and flammable materials.

Can I leave a candle unattended?

No. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

When should I stop burning my candle?

Discontinue use when approximately 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) of wax remains at the bottom of the container.

Can I burn multiple candles together?

Yes. Burning complementary fragrances together can create a unique scent experience, provided there is adequate space between candles.
